Kitchen Islands

Are you planning on installing an island for your kitchen for your next project? Kitchen islands can add to the look and function of your kitchen, whether it is a fixed island for a large kitchen, or a mobile island for your mid size or small kitchen.

The earliest form of kitchen island was a farm table, which enabled cooks to have more work space in their kitchen. These tables also served as informal dining tables as well as kitchen workstations. Today, kitchen islands come in a wide range of shapes and styles to match your kitchen's decor and to serve as a focal point of the room. Kitchen islands can include not only counter space, but also cooktops, ovens, sinks, and storage space.

The main advantages of a kitchen island include:

  • Islands have the look and feel of furniture rather than just components of a kitchen.
  • They are ideal for several kitchen tasks because they can be accessed from all sides, not just one side, like the counter.
  • Islands can also serves as an area where family and friends can join you while you are working in the kitchen.
  • Kitchen Islands make use of unused space by increasing counter space and storage space.

What Are The Things To Consider When Installing A Kitchen Island?

Having a well thought out plan is a wise thing to do when you are considering installing a kitchen island. This plan involves several steps.

  • Make sure that you have enough room for an island. Be sure that the walkway between the stationary cabinets and the island are about 36" to 42" wide.
  • Decide what kind of kitchen island is appropriate to the size of your kitchen.
  • To see how a kitchen island is going to fit into your kitchen, stack empty boxes in the size and shape of the desired island, in the location where you want it.
  • Consider the function of your kitchen island such as the possibility of extra counter space, extra storage space, an additional sink, or an additional cooktop.
  • Be sure that the height of the kitchen island matches the height of your counter tops.
  • Make sure when you install the island that there is efficient movement between the island and appliances and counters.
  • Consider the kitchen lighting. Lighting over the island or near the island is necessary so the area will not be too dark.
  • Kitchen islands work best when the kitchen itself is larger and and has space for a fixed island. An island will become an obstruction in a small kitchen and may hinder easy movement. Small to mid size kitchens may benefit from either a kitchen cart or a portable butcher block.

Whether it is a large custom kitchen island or a small portable butcher block, be sure to consider the style that you might want when installing an island. It should contribute to the style and character of the kitchen. Another important thing to consider is to have the island installed properly so it will be of the best use to you. If installing the kitchen island yourself, be sure to take note of the installation instructions, follow them and take your time in the process. This will guarantee that your kitchen island will be serving a very useful purpose in your kitchen in years to come.
